FDA Approves Restylane for Lip Augmentation

Restylane is the most studied dermal filler worldwide. This filler was approved by the FDA in 2003 to smooth wrinkles and plump up the nasal labial folds or marionette lines. Many practitioners would also use Restylane off-label to volumize the lips.

Recently, the FDA has approved Restylane for the use in lip augmentation or lip plumping. This will be the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler on the market today approved for this purpose in patients over 21 years of age.

According to the ASAPS, Americans spend $1.9 billion in 2010 on injectable fillers. They also reported that hyaluronic acid procedures were the second most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure, preceded only by Botox injections.

“Empty Nesters” and Plastic Surgery

The baby boomer generation, those aged 50-60+ have now entered a stage of life filled with new beginnings, some calling this time the “second adolescence”.

The children have grown, married or are living on their own leaving the nest, and now is the time to concentrate on self improvement. Some want to try to regain their youthful appearance.

In this age group, the number of cosmetic surgical procedures has steadily increased even with the recent economic downturns. We are seeing the number of rhytidectomy (facelift), blepharoplasty (eyelid tuck) surgeries increase in part because the “empty nesters” tend to stay inthe workforce longer and in some cases begin new careers.

We have also seen the number of non-invasive procedures such as Botox, Juvederm, Perlane, Restylane, Radiesse and Sculptra filler treatments increase dramatically.

We are facing the worst unemploment rates in decades and those 55 and older are hit the hardest with an estimated 30% of the unemployed being out of work for over one year. As the job market shrinks, more and more older job-seekers realize the importance of keeping their job skills current, and at the same time, keeping their appearance as youthful as possible to compete in this competitive job market.

Even with today’s economic challenges, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that 12.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed. These procedures range from the non-invasive such as botox, dermal fillers and laser treatments, to the more aggressive procedures such as eyelifts and facelifts.

Nancy Etcoff, a psychology professor at Harvard Medical School, has stated that ” attractive people are more likely to be hired and promoted, earn higher salaries and be perceived as more intelligent and creative than their less fetching peers.”

Wrinkle Fillers!

Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvaderm(Allergan) and Restylane(Medicis) have been used for some time for facial rejuvenation. These products have been subjectively thought to provide excellent results with good safety, longevity by many plastic surgeons and dermatologists. Objectively, however, longevity of these products have not been well documented.
A recent study in a major peer-reviewed journal of plastic surgery has demonstrated excellent persistence of these fillers in the tear trough area ( the depression between the lower eyelid and cheek) through use of 3-dimensional imaging.
This is an area where patients may look tired and aged with bagginess of the lower eyelids and loss of soft tissue volume of the cheeks over the years. Although, there may be other surgical options such as an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), for those more interested in nonsurgical treatments , hyaluronic acid fillers continue to represent an excellent option with good longevity, particularly in the tear trough area.
