What is the Procedure for Liposuction

The procedure for liposuction ranges from simple to moderate and requires very mild forms of anesthesia.  Patients

who use regular aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs should definitely stop taking them at least 2 to 3 weeks before surgery.  

Any patients that have anemia will probably be asked to take iron supplements. Women will most likely be asked to stop taking the contraceptive pill.  If the liposuction area is small, and in the upper quadrant of the body, then a patient may be given a local anesthetic. If the problem is in the lower extremities, it requires more of an area be covered. The procedure may require an epidural. This is so that the lower portion of the body is numbed.  Once the anesthesia has been given, the doctor takes what is known as a cannula. Fat cells are removed from the body.

Forms of Liposuction

There are a number of different ways that liposuction can be completed.  There is dry liposuction, which means nothing is done, the cells are just sucked out after the anesthesia is given.  This is rarely done because there is a higher risk of bruising and bleeding. There is the most common form that is completed today, which is tumescent liposuction.  This is where saline and lidocaine are pumped under the skin where the cells are to be removed from before they are removed.  

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is when ultrasonic waves are sent through the cannula to melt the fat away and sucked out.  Power-assisted liposuction is where the cannula moves rapidly back and forth. This assists the suctioning of the cells and Laser Assisted Lipolysis, where a laser melts the cells and then tumescent liposuction is used.
