Breast Reduction Surgery

Overview

Patients may choose to have breast reduction surgery because of shoulder, neck or back pain, discomfort while sleeping, rashes under trapped skin, an inability to participate in particular sports or wear certain clothes, or even a feeling of self-consciousness. Feeling comfortable in your own skin isn’t always easy. The psychological, physical, and emotional reasons for desiring a reduced bust line are all real and valid.

Dr. Delia genuinely understands how a distorted self-image can impact a woman’s esteem. As a plastic surgeon and true artist, he combines a skilled hand with an artful eye for masterful results. He believes in an individualized approach that puts the patient’s vision at the forefront. His ability to listen carefully to what his patients want and execute that in a collaborative and expert manner makes him an ideal choice for a breast reduction procedure. Dr. Delia’s goal is to provide each patient with results that restore their confidence and inspire an empowered attitude.

What does a breast reduction address?

Every patient is different, and Dr. Delia makes a point of taking the time to consult closely with his patients to determine how much of a reduction is needed. Breast reduction surgery removes a part of the breast skin, fat, and glandular (breast) tissue.

The benefits from a breast reduction are more than a shift in physical appearance. Patients may experience less shoulder and back pain, a more symmetrical appearance, and improvement in the fit of clothing.

Before the operation, you will work with Dr. Delia to discuss your aesthetic and physical goals regarding your breast reduction. The incision location will be determined based on the shape and size of your breasts. Dr. Delia will work with you to decide on the best course of action for your individual needs. No two breast reduction surgeries are the same, and Dr. Delia’s attention to detail and artistic vision allows him to tailor the procedure to your desires.

What does a breast reduction entail?

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia with a licensed anesthetist overseeing the procedure. The surgery takes anywhere from 2-3 hours, depending on the degree of reduction desired. All of Dr. Delia’s breast reductions are performed at an outpatient surgery center.

A breast reduction may result in a lifted breast with the nipple and areola made the appropriate size and located at the correct position. The procedure can also be combined with a tummy tuck or liposuction. Dr. Delia will discuss the best way to achieve your desired aesthetic during your consultation.

Breast reduction recovery

Expect to feel tired and sore after the procedure. There may be some post-operative discomfort, but generally, the pain is managed with oral medications and subsides within a couple of days.

Although you go home after the surgery and must walk around, you will be unable to perform any strenuous activity. You will need to limit movement so that the tissues can heal. A capable adult should stay with you for a 24-hour period following the surgery to monitor recovery. Most patients can return to work after one week.

Who are good candidates for a breast reduction?

Many women who choose to undergo breast reduction surgery may have excessively large breasts for their body size. Symptoms may include shoulder grooves, moisture issues/rash under the breasts or an overall disproportionate body shape as a result.
