Overview

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)is a laser light treatment that significantly reduces the appearance of age spots, freckles, broken capillaries and rosacea, all while tightening the skin. Photofacials use intense pulsed light that emits multiple wavelengths into the skin to target pigment-producing cells below the surface. The light energy is converted to heat energy, and that heat destroys the excessive melanin-producing cells, eventually dispersing pigmented areas. IPL is used on the face, décolleté (also known as your chest and neck area) and hands.

 What does IPL address?

Intense pulsed light treatments are ideal for patients looking to improve fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, vascular lesions, capillary inflammation, skin tone, and discoloration. Due to the multiple wavelengths used during an IPL treatment, it can be adjusted for a spectrum of skin tones.

What does an IPL photofacial entail?

Photofacials are not traditionally described as painful, but it may be uncomfortable for some patients. While the length of an IPL photofacial varies, it may leave the skin slightly red or puffy. Otherwise, there is no downtime post-treatment, and patients are free to return to their regular skin care routine after 48 hours and no use of retinoids.

After the treatment

IPL results improve over time. Sun protection and skin care maintenance are essential to the longevity of the results, and a new series of treatments are recommended every year for optimal outcomes. Sunburns and overexposure will bring back old spots and freckles, so be sure to wear your sunscreen.
