Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Overview

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a type of body-contouring surgery. It’s designed to improve overall abdominal shape. It reduces stretch marks, unsightly bulges, and extra stretched-out skin. As the body ages, it naturally loses elasticity that can result in an excess of loose skin. Additionally, extreme weight loss, pregnancy, or weakened stomach muscles can leave the skin sagging, leaving many men and women dissatisfied with their appearance.

Dr. Delia understands that deciding to undergo an abdominoplasty can be transformative and empowering. He aims to provide his patients with a judgment-free environment in which they can express their aesthetic goals with confidence and the assurance that their voice will be heard. Dr. Delia believes that listening to his patients and understanding what they are looking to achieve is just as crucial as executing the procedure itself.

Each tummy tuck is individualized to fit each patient’s need. Dr. Delia’s focus is to help patients regain their youthful appearance with an overall improved body contour and silhouette. This also provides the extra benefit of looking great in form-fitting clothes.

What does tummy tuck surgery address?

A tummy tuck can restore a youthful appearance to the abdominal areas for the right candidates. When it comes to abdominoplasty, attention to detail is critical: it is essential that the belly button maintains a natural shape and that the scars are low enough to be well hidden under your favorite underwear or bikini.

The abdominoplasty procedure Dr. Delia specializes in incorporates three components — removal of excess skin, liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, and waist, and tightening of the abdominal muscles. He utilizes the latest techniques to achieve drainless abdominoplasty.

What is a mini tummy tuck surgery?

A mini tummy tuck generally involves the lower tummy below the ambilicus. It may be indicated for patients with excess skin or skin laxity below the umbilicas only. It usually does not involve muscle tightening and may be combined with liposuction in other areas (upper abdomen or waist).

Recovery is usually much less than a full tummy tuck as muscle tightening is usually not necessary.

What does tummy tuck surgery entail?

Complete tummy tuck surgery usually takes several hours, depending on the extent of work required. If a “mini tummy tuck” combined with liposuction is all that is required, this results in a quicker recovery and less scarring than a traditional abdominoplasty alone. A mini tummy tuck may take an hour or two. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. There is no need for an overnight stay for most patients.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

It may take you several weeks to feel like your old self again. If you start out in top physical condition, with strong abdominal muscles, recovery from a tummy tuck will be much faster. Some people return to work as early as one to two weeks after surgery. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for an additional 4-6 weeks.

Although you may go home after the surgery, we advise that you stay with a capable adult for 24 hours following the surgery. Post-operative discomfort, swelling, and sensitivity will diminish over the first few weeks and scars from the incisions will begin to fade in the months that follow.

Who are the best candidates?

The best candidates for tummy tuck surgery have pockets of fat or loose, sagging skin that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Dr. Delia will help determine if this operation is the best procedure to address your desires and aesthetic goals during your consultation.
