A New Year/New You !

We all make New Year's resolutions.  For many it's a time to consider a healthier lifestyle.  We make plans to eat healthy, lose those unsightly pounds packed on over the holiday season and begin a regular exercise program. When exercise and diet fails to tighten your loose skin or get rid of those localized fat deposits, tighten  muscle laxity  over your tummy area, it might be just be the time to consider body contouring  surgery such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or liposuction. Abdominoplasty surgery is designed to correct protruding or loose skin and tighten loose muscles in the abdominal area.  The excess fat and skin is...

Breast Feeding with Breast Implants

According to the American Pregnancy Association, breast feeding is the best way to provide nourishment for your child.  Not only does the breast supply nutrition, it also allows the baby to benefit from the mother's immune system. As with any surgery, if you're considering breast work, it's important to discuss with your ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon your desire to breast feed in the future.  This information may affect your choice of incision and implant placement. Breast feeding after breast augmentation (enhancement) surgery is in most cases possible.  The most common type of implants used today for breast augmentation are either saline...

Recovery following Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation (enhancement) surgery continues to be one of the most popular procedures performed in the USA today. As with most surgeries,  the recovery period is as important as the surgery itself.  How you recover in a large part may determine your final results.  Below are a few things you should be aware of. 1.  You will be given pain medications following surgery to help with post-operative discomfort. 2.  You should rest and relax immediately after surgery and take it easy for the next several days.  However, strict bed rest is frowned upon,  you should move around to prevent any blood clots...

Improved quality of life after Breast Reconstruction

A recent study from researchers at Sloan-Kettering Cancer center in New York confirms that women undergoing breast reconstruction using their own tissues felt better about themselves as early as three weeks after the surgery.  Improvements in satisfaction, psychosocial well-being and sexual well-being were noted after the reconstructive surgery. A previous study from Harvard University from 2010 including women with all types of breast reconstruction, including use of breast implants, reported those who used their own tissues were most satisfied despite the more lengthy surgery and recovery. Do you have a fear of needles?

At the recent, ASPS Annual Conference in Denver, a study was presented on the effectiveness of topical botulinum gel also referred to as RT001, now under study. The study involved 270 patients with moderate/severe wrinkling around the eye area.  It was noted that after application of the gel 89% experienced significant improvement. This product works by penetrating the skin and relaxing the underlying muscles.  The current study only addresses the crows feet area where the skin is relatively thin.  It is not known whether this will be effective on other areas where the skin tends to be thicker.  This product is...

Are You Too Old for Cosmetic Surgery?

Did you know that the number of men and women over the age of 65 who are having cosmetic surgical procedures is steadily climbing? Believe it or not, elective cosmetic procedures (both surgical and non-surgical) rose 29% between 2005 to 2010 (to more than 680,000), according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. (Interestingly enough, during this same time frame, similar procedures among the overall population fell 17%.) What Does This Mean? Without a doubt, this increase reflects the changing attitudes of older Americans. Many seniors are working longer and rationalize that having cosmetic enhancement will make them more competitive with younger...

More on Wrinkle Treatments!

Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) & Medical Needling Medical needling involves the use of a small rotary device which produces micro punctures  in the outer layer of the skin and allows better absorption of a variety of skin care products. This leads to increased collagen production and smoother skin with fewer wrinkles. The beneficial effects of vitamin A and C skincare products have already been proven. The difficulty tends to be in their ability to penetrate the outer layer of the skin. This is where medical needling procedures come into play. If you find yourself in this position, you should know that a series...

Do Your Homework! Know Your Surgeon.

In an era when cosmetic surgery has gotten faster and cheaper than ever before, and has actually been done out of shopping malls in some instances, it's become more important than ever to know your surgeon! Many health care providers (including non-physicians) are now performing plastic surgery procedures. This begs the question: Are they even qualified? American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Member Surgeons are specifically trained in cosmetic surgery and are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which is approved by the American Board of Medical Specialities. ASPS Member Surgeons operate only in accredited medical facilities,  adhere to...

Patient Interview: Fighting the BRCA-1 Gene

Having just concluded Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we thought it was only fitting that we interviewed a handful of our patients who have come to us recently for reconstructive surgery following breast cancer operations. Their experiences are powerful examples of the importance of getting checked regularly for breast cancer. They demonstrate how your body post-cancer can be just as beautiful as before. Here is the second interview with "Betty" (not her real name): "Breast cancer runs in my family on my father’s side. Two cousins had previously undergone breast surgery. Then in June 2011, my 37-year-old sister (and mother of a 1-year-old...
